May 26th, 2013 by melissa g

The Children’s Choice Book Awards were a huge success! Young readers from across the country went to bookweekonline.com to vote in record numbers. More than 1,000,000 votes were cast and the winners were announced at a NYC gala on May 13th. In case you missed the big event, here are a few pictures courtesy of Publisher’s Weekely. You can click over to Publisher’s Weekly to see more images of the exciting night. Who wouldn’t have fun with the likes of Lois Lowry and Meg Cabot!

So, who were the lucky award winners?:

Book of the Year, Kindergarten to 2nd grade: Nighttime Ninja by Barbara DaCosta, illus. by Ed Young

Book of the Year, 3rd to 4th grade: Bad Kitty for President by Nick Bruel

Book of the Year, 5th to 6th grade: Dork Diaries 4: Tales from a Not-So-Graceful Ice Princess
by Rachel Renée Russell

Book of the Year, Teens: The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

Author of the Year: Jeff Kinney for Dork Diaries 4: Tales from a Not-So-Graceful Ice Princess

Illustrator of the Year: Robin Preiss Glasser for Fancy Nancy and the Mermaid Ballet, written by Jane O’Connor.

I wish I could have been there, but it was my son’s birthday, and I just couldn’t miss that! We did celebrate Children’s Book Week the next night when we attended the Read Alliance gala. We met some of the READ tutors who impressed us with their poise and confidence. And, speaking of success, the auction raised more than $40,000 in about 15 minutes. Everyone in the room was obviously inspired by the incredible work that is done by the Read Alliance organization.
