Bankstreet Book Awards Announced!

Within the great Bankstreet College of Education is a Children’s Book Committee who read and review countless numbers of children’s books to put together The Best Children’s Books of the Year annotated list. This is a list of 600+ books that they have chosen as the best out there based on accuracy and literary quality while considering their emotional impact on children.

Along the way they also give a few special awards. Here are this year’s winners:

The Josette Frank Award

“This award for fiction honors a book or books of outstanding literary merit in which children or young people deal in a positive and realistic way with difficulties in their world and grow emotionally and morally.”

Bluefish by Pat Schmatz. Ages 12 & up.

The Flora Stieglitz Straus Award

“The award is presented annually for a distinguished work of nonfiction which serves as an inspiration to young people. Flora Stieglitz┬áStraus stood for the values of courage, hard work, truth and beauty, while adapting to a changing world. “

The Claudia Lewis Award

Claudia Lewis “…conveyed her love and understanding of poetry with humor and grace. The award is given for the best poetry book of the year.”

Flesh and Blood So Cheap: The Triangle Fire and Its Legacy by Albert Marrin
