Children’s Book List: Nelson Mandela

“When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people

and his country, he can rest in peace.”

(Interview for Mandela, 1994)

A shining light of freedom dimmed yesterday with the passing of the great Nelson Mandela.  This man defies description, he is larger than life, and any attempt summarize his accomplishments would fall short.  He was a true hero.

My first thought yesterday was how do I talk to my children about Nelson Mandela.  How do I explain who this man was and what he did for modern society?  He sacrificed his own freedom for the freedom of others.  He saw a (collasal) wrong and he didn’t turn away, instead he worked his whole life to make it right.

Mandela’s passing is what you call an epic teachable moment for our children.  It is our responsibility as parents to see that his work and memory lives on in the next generation.

So, that said, how do we do that?  We turn to books.  It’s what we do around here at Sweet on Books.  I have compiled a list of books about Nelson Mandela below.  If you click on the cover image, you will be taken to Amazon.  The Nelson Mandela Foundation website is also a great resource, specifically the FAQ page.

Have a restful weekend reading and relaxing and talking about the late, great Nelson Mandela.
