Summer Reading List 2011 – Reader Jr.

June 12th, 2011 by melissa y.

The research on the importance of summer reading is clear:  Your child can lose up to 3 months of reading progress if they don’t continue reading throughout the summer.*  As a teacher, I saw it happen year after year.  Fluent readers who don’t read during the summer, re-enter school in the fall at the same level, or worse, they regress.  As a result, teachers are forced to play catch-up in September and October, losing valuable instructional time for those students.  All that can be avoided if we make summer reading a priority.

We also have a personal, passionate argument for summer reading.  We think that one of the greatest joys of summer is a long, lazy afternoon with nothing to do but curl up with a great book.  You can pick your location:  under the shade of a tree, on the front porch, on the beach, on a lounge chair by the pool, or on your cozy couch in the air conditioning.  The possibilities are endless.  Without the pressures of school and scheduling, children have the freedom to lose themselves in the pages of wonderful books that can transport them to fascinating, funny and thrilling places.  Take advantage of this time when children can read for the sake of reading.  It can be the most magical reading of all.
