Throwback Thursday: The Westing Game

October 24th, 2013 by melissa g

This week, we’re heading back to 1979 when The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin won the Newbery Medal. The Westing Game is a perfect choice for Throwback Thursday because it’s just as good a read today as it was 30+ years ago!

Who can resist a story about a dead millionaire who brings 16 people together to compete for his inheritance? The quirky characters and their crazy antics will keep you on the edge of your seat as this mystery takes unexpected twists and turns.

And, here’s a little known fact that I discovered on A Fuse #8 Production, which is a School Library Journal blog:

“What is the only Newbery winning jacket illustrated by someone who would later go on to win their own Newbery?”

The answer: Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. Ellen Raskin illustrated the original cover for A Wrinkle in Time, and then went on to win her own Newbery Medal as author of The Westing Game.

In honor of Throwback Thursday, we hope you’ll reread The Westing Game, or tell a friend about it, or maybe even suggest it for your next book club. This clever and unforgettable book should definitely still be on all of our bookshelves. Visit Sweet on Books for our full review.
